June 17, 1970 – Hendrix’s third night at the new Electric Lady Studios. Another night noted as, “an exceptional evening session,” in the book Sessions. Eddie Kramer is assisted by Kim King at the engineering helm. They first spend an extensive amount of time, dozens of takes, edits and overdubs working on “Straight Ahead”. Moving on, Hendrix explores Dylan’s “Drifter’s Escape”.
The session finds Eddie Kramer taking a bigger responsibility in the production. Billy Cox recalls, “Except for Gary Kellgren, the other engineers we had worked with at the Record Plant ave us very little input. They just figured that Jimi knew what he was doing, so they left him alone. They would make suggestions like changing the batteries in the wah-wah pedal or replacing a Fuzz Face unit if it was causing problems, but none of them would get into a song like Eddie would do. Kramer got totally absorbed into what we were doing. Jimi appreciated that. Eddie wasn’t the type of guy who would come over the talkback and say, ‘Guys, you were playing an F# there instead of an F.’ He never got into that. He stayed on top of Jimi’s tuning and every now and then would say, ‘What’s that I hear?’ and Jimi would say, “Yeah, I hear that too. Let’s change or fix that.”
After the first three nights at Electric Lady, Hendrix along with Mitchell and Cox were off on another week of touring commitments, scheduled to return June 24.
